Story time! As much as I dislike the quality of my old NSFW artwork and was generally sick of HentaiFoundry, I kept my stuff up there in case of finding it on pay sites (and needing to prove it was mine).
But last month somebody really kind on HF mentioned that he loved how my work was “sexy in an effortless, relaxed way” and “showcases the beauty of the characters and their emotions” and I thought that was nice to say. But looking at the stuff he had in his favs and comparing it to mine (content-wise), I could see why mine was so different than the typical rule34 crotch-area-front-and-center stuff. Maybe what he didn’t realize, and what I’m realizing more often is that 99 percent of my rule34 has my female as the protagonist. She’s the instigator, or the access character (by literally being in the center of the image, or just by having the male’s expression obscured/downplayed leaving only hers for the viewer to look to)— the world in which she’s illustrated is hers to act upon. Duh, right? How could I not depict what I think of sex in those pictures?
I… didn’t think that was unusual? I thought it was natural (seems pretty common in fanfic I like, for example). But now I’m compelled to leave all of those old, crappy drawings up because, wow, what if it’s the first time someone saw that happen in a picture? I know I’m not alone in making/consuming that kind of work (my friends do too), but… yeah, is it really hard to find? I’ve mostly given up looking for it, because it’s easier to make for me.
